Postcard from the pond

Autumn's colours are already fading. A walk through Highbury Park this afternoon proved that the leaves are falling, not just turning. A mob of ducks gathered at the other end of the pond where a toddler had food for them and I was left with this reflection. Bonfires were smoking in back gardens and squirrels were dashing up trees and dislodging more leaf litter. Somehow it's less antisocial when nature behaves in a loutish manner.

You said it. Trees are behaving disgracefully in my yard (perhaps yours as well)! Why, they're dropping leaves whenever and wherever they wish. No sooner than I have raked up several barrels of leaves than those thoughtless things sprinkle on my yard again! Why, I've threatened to turn them into patio furniture, but it does little good.

Still, it's much better than winter, which, I have it on good authority, is due in just over a month.

I do hope your winter is warmer than last years.

Hi Norm
we're having a worryingly mild autumn so far. This can't bode well...

Sorry to hear you have so much work in your garden. Mine is small enough not to be too much trouble.

K, with gas prices the way they now are this mild autumn is a blessing.

I have a robin on my balcony, all ready for winter. He's ridiculously sweet.

How lovely to have a robin as a visitor! One was keeping an eye on me when I first moved in, but I haven't seen him recently. Perhaps he's found better food elsewhere.

You had a robin. We had a rabid bat.

Alarming!
